On April 5, 2014, the Department and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences hosted the Iowa AATG Frühlingstagung, the annual meeting of the local chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German. In the morning, German teachers from all levels participated in a 3-hour teaching workshop lead by Dr. Katja Fullard of the Goethe-Institut, Chicago. During this time, high school students and their parents learned about the Department, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Iowa State. They also had the opportunity to tour the campus. Dean Beate Schmittmann (LAS) gave the keynote address at the awards luncheon, which was held in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union. A native of Germany, she spoke fondly of her educational and professional experiences in Germany, Scotland, and America. Dean Schmittmann also emphasized the benefits of a liberal arts education, particularly at Iowa State. She encouraged students to continue their study of world languages and cultures and concluded with a few words of encouragement in German.
